Salary Range: $75,670.40 - $112,257.60

Opening Date: April 15, 2025

Closing Date: May 1, 2025 5:00 pm

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a wide variety of duties related to protecting life and property of City residents. Functions can and will change on a day to day basis. The Captain will need to be able to adapt to numerous challenges and multi-task.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of the Fire Chief.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Firefighter/Advance Emergency Medical Technicians.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Functions as the Station Officer.

Be able to function as an Incident Command on fire incidents.

Manage daily EMS response.

Command and understand how to manage MCI incidents.

Operates under state and national guidelines; maintains required state certifications.

Coordinates station, vehicles, and equipment maintenance.

Evaluates performance of firefighters.

Determines the need for new equipment and supplies for assigned station.

Coordinates training of firefighters.

Schedules firefighters for work.

Conducts cause and origin investigations.

Prepares incident reports, which includes fire and EMS reports.

Participates in personnel actions such as recruitment and discipline.

Regular and predictable attendance

May be assigned special functions by the Fire Chief.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school or equivalent GED.

B. Three years of experience as a firefighter II. plus one year of specialized training in fire science, general

management, etc.

C. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of firefighting methods, techniques, and procedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment and maintenance and care; state and city codes, laws, and regulations, and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment and apparatus operation; emergency driving techniques associated with heavy firefighting apparatus; emergency medical techniques and procedures and first-aid; interpersonal communication skills. Working knowledge of training methods and techniques.

Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instruction; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on-call and on-shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

3. Required Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Driver License.

Must be Utah State Fire Officer I certified.

Must be Utah Advanced EMT certified.

Must be hazmat certified (operations level).

Must be Utah State Fire Inspector I or Company Inspector within one year of hire.

Must be Utah State Apparatus Driver Operator certified.

Must be Utah State Wildland certified within one year of hire.

Preference will be given for heavy rescue certifications.

4. Preferred Special Qualifications:

Applicants who have one or more Technical Rescue Certifications.

5. Work Environment:

Position generally performs in a controlled environment, but subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response travel expected in normal course of performing duties. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application required, i.e., memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving; and continuous use of motor skills.

FLSA AND AT-WILL STATUS

This position is non-appointed and is entitled to protections of Utah Code 10-3-1105. As such, the Fire Captain shall be entitled to due process appeal authority as set forth in Utah Code 10-3-1106.

The Fire Captain position is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
