Job Description

Project Overview:

The Walsh-VINCI Transit Community Partners (WVTCP) Joint Venture (JV) consisting of VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Walsh Construction has been selected to construct the $2.9BN Design Build Red Line Extension (RLE) project – the largest civil construction contract ever awarded by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The RLE Mainline Design-Build (MDB) Project will extend the CTA's Red Line by 5.6 miles, extending from the existing terminal at 95th/Dan Ryan south to 130th Street and Doty Avenue. We are seeking a Safety Manager (Safety Certification Manager) who will be responsible for the management and compliance of the project safety program for an assigned area.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, develop, and manage other safety professionals under their area of responsibility to ensure the effective administration of the project/company accident prevention efforts
  • Schedule and conduct safety meetings and safety training programs as required by the area for all personnel engaged
  • Coordinate and participate in intra-agency meetings including coordination of rescue response to the incident site, the development of joint training exercises, and developing a schedule for regular familiarity trips to the tunnel for EMS personnel
  • Initiate, perform, and document jobsite inspections and audits with special emphasis on hazard recognition, unsafe behaviors, and correction of potential third party, asset loss, and workers’ compensation losses. This necessitates the ability to think independently, communicate thoroughly, and facilitate the implementation of corrections/behaviors
  • Coordinate and control the development and review of job hazard analysis for each phase of our work to ensure its safe completion. This includes assessing the need for and facilitating training as may be required
  • Submit copies of all safety records along with all safety inspection reports and certifications from regulating agencies and insurance companies
  • Coordinate and participate in regulatory agency inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Conduct site inspections of project work areas and equipment
  • Develop, organize, and implement safety related programs that meet company safety standards
  • Assisting in the investigation of incidents and determining root causes and recommend corrective/preventive measures

Qualifications:

Required

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 5 years’ construction safety experience with experience in heavy construction
  • Certified Health and Safety Technician (CHST) designation or working toward certification
  • OSHA 30 Hour Construction Safety Trained
  • Safety Trained Supervisor-Construction (STS-C) Certified, through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals
  • First aid/CPR/AED Certified
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs
  • Must be able to work in varied physical environments which include both indoor and outdoor work in the hot and cold.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA Construction Standards, VDOT Safety Standards, MUTCD standards, and other state and federal agency guidelines
  • The ability to recognize hazardous situations and make independent judgments concerning the general safety of workers
  • Team player with a professional image, capable of handling highly confidential information
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment that may require long hours, including nights and weekends
  • Demonstrate technical and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite

Preferred

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in an applicable field (Construction Management, Safety, etc.)
  • Marine, tunnel, or highway construction experience
  • CSP, ASP, or GSP, designation

Salary Range:

  • $155,000.00 - $170,000.00

Work Environment:

  • Involves a dynamic and challenging work environment
  • Includes tasks such as maintaining and repairing heavy machinery, ensuring equipment operates efficiently, and adhering to safety protocols in construction sites
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests when on-site

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift 25lbs
  • Walking and standing while in-office or on-site
  • Occasional climbing on and off equipment and bending
