Job Description

Black Family Hospitality , was founded by sibling trio Christina, Michael, and Mark Black in 2014 with the opening of their first restaurant, Terry Black’s Barbecue in Austin, Texas named after their father, Terry. Since then it has expanded across Texas to Lockhart, Dallas, Waco and Fort Worth.

The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and repair of equipment, electrical systems, heating systems, HVAC/Refrigeration, plumbing, painting, and other assigned duties across all Black Family Hospitality properties in Texas.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop a work schedule that minimizes disruption to guest service and restaurant operations.
  • Estimate the time and cost of repairs and equipment.
  • Inspect and accurately diagnose common malfunctions in restaurant equipment.
  • Prioritize and complete necessary equipment repairs promptly.
  • Repair, perform preventative maintenance, and replace a wide range of restaurant equipment (grills, walk-in freezers/coolers, ice machines, ovens, etc.), electrical systems, heating systems, HVAC/Refrigeration systems, plumbing, and painting.
  • Respond to emergency service calls for repairs.
  • Implement preventative maintenance procedures as directed by company leadership.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to safely operate and manage inventory within a company vehicle.
  • Successful completion of a background check and motor vehicle review.
  • Mechanical and electrical skills, including the ability to read wiring diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, schematics, plans, and specifications.
  • Willingness to travel out-of-town, including overnight stays and weekends.
  • Availability for on-call status, responding to work needs regardless of the time or day.
  • Ability to regularly report to the main office in Austin, TX, unless working offsite.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including 45-55 hours per week, and adapt to changing work demands.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Preferred: Owns a basic tool set.

Education and Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience in equipment repair, service industry experience in appliance repair, kitchen equipment, refrigeration, and HVAC preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Accredited Technical/Vocational School.
  • Preferred: Relevant technical training, licenses, and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 75-100 pounds, and perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and routine lifting/carrying.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at various heights.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand movements while using tools.
  • Must use personal protective equipment (i.e., goggles and gloves) when working with or around hot equipment.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Black Family Hospitality will reimburse mileage from the Austin Corporate office to the work site and hotel expenses (if applicable).
