7:00PM - 3:30 AM

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

• Independently performs the major tasks involved in the routine preparation of histological slides from surgical and biopsy specimens and human tissues including embedding, microtomy, mounting, and staining of tissue sections, and labeling of finished slides.
• Performs a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining techniques to demonstrate a variety of tissue components or materials present in tissues, as required.
• Prepares standard laboratory reagents and solutions with precision.
• Operates basic laboratory equipment, such as tissue processors (standard and microwave), embedding station, tissue microtome, tissue stainer and slide coverslipper.
• Maintains and calibrate laboratory equipment and observe established safety procedures.
• Keeps abreast of current literature and techniques in histotechnology.
• Maintains a clean and well-organized work area.
• Properly label and handle hazardous and non-hazardous waste according to RCRA regulations.
• Properly label and handle biohazardous waste.
• Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.

OTHER FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

• Miscellaneous projects identified by the pathologist as necessary or as assigned by supervisor.
• Any/all tasks that are performed by a lab aide, in the event that staff coverage is necessary.

EXTENT OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Immediate supervisor outlines assignments. The Histotechnician is directly supervised by the Histology Supervisor, indirectly supervised by the Director of Anatomic Pathology and works under the professional direction of the Pathologist. After training, minimal direct supervision should be required for the person who is competently handling the routine essential functions of this position.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Histotechnician I

Histotechnician II

Histotechnician III

Education:

Bachelor of Science Degree preferred

Bachelor of Science Degree preferred

Bachelor of Science Degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

HT or HTL certification preferred

HT or HTL certification preferred

HT or HTL certification required*

*BS or >15 years’ experience may be substituted in place of certification

Skills/Abilities:

Knowledge of standard laboratory equipment to set up and perform routine and specialized histology tasks, including the use of a light microscope, tissue handling, and slide preparation. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook). Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Experience:

Minimum one year experience using histology techniques

Minimum five years’ experience using histology techniques

Minimum 10 years’ experience using histology techniques
